Making treasure from trash

Today?s waste may become tomorrow?s energy source.
A new technology has been developed to use several types of biowaste (including ordinary sewage) to produce hydrogen.
Hong Liu, an OSU assistant professor of biological and ecological engineering, is the driving force behind the development of this new type of biowaste treatment.
This technology was invented by Liu and Bruce Logan, Liu?s former supervisor at Penn State University.
?My research group at OSU is further developing this technology and has recently made some interesting discoveries.?
During her time at Penn State University, Liu, along with a research team composed of Logan and Jenna Ditzig, was published in the ?International Journal of Hydrogen Energy? on Feb. 20, 2007. The essay describes how, in microbial fuel cells (MFC), bacteria ?oxidize organic matter, producing protons and electrons. The electrons then travel around a circuit to the cathode, producing current.?

There?s nothing like the smell of fresh silage in the morning.
Or at least, that?s what many students attribute the smell to. The OSU Dairy Center is directly west of central campus, and during the evening, west winds may account for some of the inescapable smell.
