Four bands rocked the McAlexander Field House Oct. 3rd, drawing a full house of students. The concert opened its doors at 6 p.m. to all students, specifically targeting those eligible to vote.
Once hand-stamped at the door, students were free to peruse food booths, Jamba Juice smoothies, or take a look at the two political party groups set up behind tables decorated in either Obama T-shirts or College Republican buttons. ASOSU wandered throughout, and volunteers stood with clipboards and voting registration forms at the ready, approaching individuals to question their registration status.
Ryan Mann, ASOSU president, opened with a few words of advice and guidance for all who came out to watch.
"We can really make a difference to this country," said the assistant coach of men's basketball, Doug Stewart.
OSU President Ed Ray, also had a few words to add. "I want to speak to you not as your president tonight. Register and get out and vote!"
Ray also advised students to vote no on measures 59 and 61. Measure 59 is an initiated state statute ballot, which if passed, would join Alabama, Iowa and Louisiana as the only states to allow federal income taxes to be fully deducted on state income tax returns, according to an online source. Measure 61 would create mandatory minimum prison sentences for certain crimes.
Head football coach Mike Riley made an appearance as well. "I want to have a team that you're proud of. We're back in the conference!"
Riley also encouraged students to support the Beavers at the upcoming home game this Saturday versus the Washington State Cougars.
Slotted to arrive last in the line-up of bands, Eve 6 was the band of honor and was set to follow gigs by local groups Break As We Fall and Blue Ember, as well as the New York-based band Cloud 9.
