The first Crossroads International foreign film festival is bringing cultures to life and raising funds.
"The festival is a tremendous opportunity to see normally unavailable movies," said Jessica Wisor, a Crossroads volunteer. "They give a cultural insight you wouldn't be able to find without travelling to these countries or experiencing them on the big screen."
The festival is being held on four consecutive Sundays starting on Jan. 28 at the Avalon Cinema. It will feature films from India, Italy, Tunisia, Japan, Brazil, Palestine, and the U.S.
On its opening Sunday, 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India' and 'Red Satin' from Tunisia were shown.
Along with these films, there were two special presentations. A group of Indian children sang to introduce 'Lagaan.'
Later in the evening, a troupe of belly dancers brought the film, 'Red Satin' to life.
"The festival has been really successful. I'm excited for the few weeks we have left," Jordana Leeb said.
Leeb is a volunteer committee member for Crossroads. She heard about the opportunity to help organize the festival through the program's Web site.
The next three weekends will include showings of an encore of 'Red Satin,' 'Lost Boys of Sudan' and 'The Man Who Copied' on Feb. 4; 'Dreams' and 'Rana's Wedding' on Feb. 11; and 'The Last Kiss' and 'The Man Who Copied' on Feb. 18.
Tickets for one night at the festival are eight dollars. OSU students get a two dollar discount.
So far the fund-raiser has been very successful. The festival sold out last weekend.
At the shows, Crossroads will also be selling raffle tickets and T-shirts as a way to raise more support for their programs.
The programs run by Crossroads International include: Conversation partners, Spanish Conversation partners, Crossroads Conversation School, Friendship Homes and the Three-Day Home Stay program.
"We're really trying to connect international students to the OSU community," said Dawn Moyer, executive director of Crossroads International.
