Editorial - Major deployments

As OSU students, it is not uncommon to hear debates about who's major is harder. This debate seems most common between the science/engineering students and liberal studies students. Sometimes comments like: "Oh, your GPA is probably perfect," "So you will be graduating early?" "That major is so easy, all you have to do is read," are directed at liberal studies students.

Before my sophomore year at OSU I made the rounds of Corvallis, desperately looking for a place to live. I came upon a house where several other college students resided and thought I would have a look around. The fellow student in charge showed me around the place and after business was over, we came to the small talk; and as I have discovered, small talk between college students most indefinitely reverts to one revolving question, "What's your major?" When I told this curious soul that I was a French and anthropology major, he hesitated and then blatantly replied: "Oh, one of those easy majors where you don't do anything.

Conservative, Liberal, White, Black, Male, Female. These labels shape our lives in so many ways, but they are really just social boxes, tiny, restrictive boxes which we force ourselves and others into. We are all human, and at root we are all basically the same.
