Musicians dominate campus during weekend

Abstract:
From the eastside dorms to Greek Row, music reverberated in and around the OSU campus throughout the weekend.

Battle of the Bands was held Friday, followed by the Flat Tail Festival on Saturday. Both events were hosted by the MUPC.

The Flat Tail Festival, featuring headliner Ghostland Observatory, was covered in an article printed in the Friday, May 30 issue of The Daily Barometer....

I can tell you who is behind the scenes, its the same non-musically diverse biased judges who had an agenda that held try outs for battle of the bands. These are the judges who decided what you were going to hear at this event. I'm a senior and my band did "try-outs" and we got denied by three kids who have no diversity when it comes to music. They had an agenda and metal had no part of it. I cannot describe the anger that boils inside of me knowing that one of the best bands got denied by biased judging. Where's the fairness? Who appointed them the music gurus that held the power to decide what you got to hear? You know who? They themselves. They put it on so they get to decide, what kind of crap is that? This autocratic approach is not what college is about and it needs to be addressed.

If you've ever heard of the band Myndissent, then you know who I am. We're a metal band thats been together for about 4 years, we get played on statewide radio stations (101.5 and 101.1) we've done interviews on these stations and entertainment papers, we've done large shows all over like Wow Hall, McDonald Theater in Eugene and Roseland Theater in Portland and with crowds chanting encore at the end of every show. Listen, we play heavy music, but it doesn't mean that it sucks. Time in time again I've played for people that said they'd never listed to what we do and after they've experienced us live they love it. I take it very personally that we got denied to play at this show, it would have been a nice end to a what was a great college experience. Its something like finding a hair in a good meal.

I've been playing music for years and I wanted to show OSU why I had hair down to my chest while wielding black metal shirts everyday in class. I wanted to show them why I don't conform to the usual college boy standards with a pink collar popped abercrombie shirt, why I don't have plaid shorts with my legs shaved and why my hair isn't frosted with highlights and hanging out at tanning salons. Its because music is my life, its the way I live and its my culture and the day I saw we didn't make battle of the bands was the day I got discriminated against for who I am. Thats as close to discrimination a white dude like me can feel, and it really sucks. Battle of the bands tried to crap on us twice by not only having an agenda that didn't include metal, but it also changed dates from the 31st to the 30th and we had a show at Platinum that night. Regardless we still had a couple hundred people show with encore chants but it would have been a few thousand if it weren't for the few autocratic judges that decided what you were going to hear and what you weren't. I wonder if you will even read this, is freedom of speech still protected or will this too be filtered and denied?

P.S. Look for Myndissent at the Portland Meadow's for Van's Warped Tour August 10th.

Dude... I'm in a metal band... and we got in... so what's your point? In fact, we won... so I really fail to see your point.

Actually a better question, what's your solution? You should just go into the MUPC and see if you can get things changed instead of talking about it here. If you're a student it's easy, if you're not a student, it's not all that much more difficult. If you want more metal in the battle next year, take it upon yourself to see that it's fairly represented, but then... you might be forming your own agenda, so tread lightly.

Posting this stuff isn't going to make anything change, unless you go do it yourself. But arguing on the internet is like racing in the special oplympics... even if you win you're still retarded... so yeah... I'm done

What's your solution then Matt?

And Lisa, I'm glad you appreciate the time and effort that every other band put into making sure that they were at the top of their game. Have you got a solution to make the judging process a bit more fair?

How exactly would one go about a completely unbiased judging process, just short of getting people from out of town to judge (which actually was done this year).

Would you do on pure crowd response? Because if that's the case, I personally saw huge amounts of people turn their backs and leave after Honest to Empire was done playing. I'm not the only one who noticed either, so not only were the judges saying something about the bands that placed, but the crowd was as well.

And if we're going for conflict of interest here, how close of friends are you to Break as we Fall? Because if there's any connection there, then I think this article has just barely skimmed around a conflict of interest issue.

To be honest, when I heard the first two bands called, I honestly thought that Break as we Fall was going to win, it was a huge surprise to me that Honest to Empire won. Break as we Fall is in fact an excellent band, but overall this year the level of talent and excellence was much higher than that of last years, so making a choice for the judges I'm sure had to be incredibly difficult.

But again, I'm glad you appreciate the time and effort put in by all the bands into putting on a memorable show for the students of OSU and the Corvallis Community.

When you come up with a solution to the judging 'problem', send it to MUPC, they'd love to hear it, they're always looking for input.
