Legislation proposes cutting adjunct profs in Oregon University System

If passed, the bill would require six out of every eight faculty members to be full-time tenured, or tenure track, leaving no more than 25 percent of positions available for part-time employees....

Jock hits the nail on the head on this one. You cannot ask us to cut our budget, while at the same time insisting that we abandon cost savings measures which allow us to continue offering the classes students need. Yes, adjuct faculty are generally not as invested as full time tenured staff. At the same time, many also do not have research hanging over their head, and have more office time available. Importantly, most students see full tenured faculty in the upper divisions regardless, so I am unsure how changing the professor in a 250 person class will somehow make it easier to find a seat in an over-crowded classroom. I think Representative Buckley is acting on anecdotal observations, instead of actually studying the problems at the university.
