Playing role in national policies
Abstract:
OSU may be more of a political mover shaker than it would appear at first glance.

First, I would like to clarify a couple of things about this article. For the most part, it is accurate. But, I wanted to note that my part in the project regarding Shishmaref was limited to interviewing King Islanders about their experiences upon relocating to Nome. Based upon my interviews with King Islanders and in reviewing the literature about other cases, the coauthors of the study on Shishmaref (Peter Schweitzer and Elizabeth Marino) made the argument that the people of Shishmaref should not be relocated to Nome or to Kotzebue.
Also, I need to correct the statement about Shishmaref already moving further inland. To date, the village of Shishmaref is still in its original location, where it is vulnerable to coastal erosion. They have NOT yet relocated further inland, although I believe that that is the current plan.
Finally, to my knowledge, we do not yet know whether our research has shaped government policy with regard to the displacement and relocation of various communities. Our article will be submitted this week to Human Organization. It remains to be seen whether policy makers actually listen. We hope that they do and that is the intention of the article.
Thank you,
Deanna Kingston
