Rallying a different legend
Abstract:
I see on osubeavers.com a press release from Athletic Director Bobby D. that was issued recently, reassuring everyone that the legend is indeed being rallied. "About 800" people have signed up to rally this legend so far. By the way, who is the legend? I've been thinking about that a lot lately....

I am a beaver, but even I can acknowledge the fact that Oregon's season last year was tainted by the loss of Dixon.
As for the basketball team, they need a lot more than a corporate sponsor, they need to play defense and shoot the ball. a corporate sponsor isn't going to get a recruit to play in C-town. Rose and Jones are also not the answer. perhaps some crazy jerseys from nike will get some kids to come to campus, but the coaching needs to be improved and I am not convinced on the current coaching staff.
As for the football team, stupid jerseys are one thing, but that orange sports bra is just too much. We need a new design and quick. The football program is getting decent recruits - getting a guy like Kuli that was considering the Ducks is a big deal. But QuizShow Rogers is not going to do much in the Pac10 with his size. How about some receivers that are over 6'1" - heck the DBs are the same size.

Lets not kid ourselves. We all like to all think that Oregon football has never been that good. Any impartial source would agree that all the antics that surround Oregon football allowed them leverage themselves into one of (if not the most) talented teams in the country last year. Last year alone they had 3 wins that were as big as our program has had in the last 5 years (including our USC victory). Of course once they lost 8 starters they were not near as good toward the end of the year, but still respectable. There is an entire risk and reward scenario here. We can keep the course and always be better than average. Or take risks, in order, to be great.

I read Kyle Johnson's article, and I wonder how it even show's up anywhere. What a piece of garbage! Oregon uniforms? Really. Really...
How about taking your little brother mentality and focusing it on ways to make your basketball team less embarrasing. I'll give you the fact that Riley has done a decent job for the football team, but if you REALLY want to talk about uniforms(training bra)then you have to mention your own disgusting appearance.
The Duck players LIKE the uniforms. They get to create, design, and wear them. It actually helps recruiting. You make yourself sound stupid with this boring article.

Its funny to me that you think that Oregon gets air time in the top 15 because they have unique uniforms. Do you really buy into that line of thinking? Last year they had a Heismen candidate, beat Michigan at Ann Arbor, beat ASU, & USC. I guess I just don't see your logic. I also don't understand why the media (you) make such a stink about the UO uniforms. If you don't like them why would you start your article by saying you want to copy the Oregon idea and get some uniforms? And by the way, if you want to get made fun of please put Wiley Coyote on your jersey chasing a beaver! Hahaha. Great stuff man.

You do know that the Ducks finished 2nd in the nation a few years ago and were second in the polls but missed out on the national championship game because nebraska unfairly jumped them. Also, they were number 2 in the nation last year and if dixon had not gotten hurt than they probably would have had a good shot at being in the title game. Im an OSU fan, but they have not been as bad as you are saying. Go Beavs.

The author had a really good chance to write a well-thought out piece. One that media links could pick up and discuss. Instead, it's just yet another redundant column about how 'lame' UO is and how great 'OSU' is.
Where's the journalist integrity? The due diligence? The fact reporting?
Yes, it's an editorial, but it's the same thing we see every year out of the barometer.
I just waited 5 minutes reading that.....

You bash the ducks because of all of the flashy things their football team has, and then you suggest that you should do them yourselves. I am really sick of the low class journalism you have in your school newspaper. You are supposed to be a professional. I don't see any articles in the Daily Emerald with the sole intent of bashing the ducks
How can you say that the ducks never have a good team? They beat two top ten teams last year and had the highest powered offense in the country until Dixon went down. Deep down inside you know the ducks would have beaten your beavers if they were at full health so don't even try to bring that up. You talk to anyone that is a really professional when it comes to college football and they will tell you that the "healthy" Oregon Ducks were one of the best team, if not the best team, in the country last year.
And instead of "potentially not-so-good team" to potentially the worst team in the entire country. Your basketball team is going to take a whole lot more than new jerseys for them to become good. You probably shouldn't set your expectations so high. If I were you I would shoot for at least one Pac-10 win.
Thanks for being an embarrassment to the state of Oregon and the Pac-10, with your journalism and your athletics.

Your knocks on UO football are laughably off base.
-Our record over the last 10-15 years is definitely not "mediocre." We've been at or near the top of the Pac-10 for some time now.
-When's the last time we went 6-6? There's been one non-winning season this decade, and that was 6-7 in 2004.
-You're only kidding yourself if you think UO hasn't fielded a team capable of competing for a title. You absolutely know the 2001-02 and 2007-08 (w/ Dixon) squads were elite. I can admit the Beavers were an elite team in 2000-01 and don't have to pretend to be ignorant of something that's painfully obvious.
Oregon football does not rely merely on marketing schemes; there is substance and success on the field. Get your facts straight. In the words of Charles Barkley, this article is "just turrrible."

You're an idiot. Quit bashing on the ducks. They are arguably the second or third best football team in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. If it weren't for injuries to Kellen Clemens and Dennis Dixon they may be have represented Oregon in the national title game twice since Harrington left. Even then, Harrington should have played in the 2001 title game. I'm not preaching for the other side, I'm just saying they're not a bad or average team, they are beyond that. They get more respect from the national media because they deserve it. Better facilities, better recruits, better seasons, more heisman candidates, I could go on. Quit being a homer. You make beaver nation look stupid.

I am a Duck fan. Just want to get that out of the way.
UO gets heat from OSU and gives plenty back in return. There just aren't peaceful rivalries. However, has hard as SOME Beaver fans hate on us Ducks, I will always want the beavers to win over their opponents (just not during the civil war). I was stoked when OSU finished with a great record last year.
For what its worth, I apologize for negative things Duck fans have to say about the Beavers. Remember, its only SOME Duck fans that participate in that.

A lot of people don't have it, Kye, and that is something to remember. When pointing out the flaws and problems with people remember, that often times when it is in writing, people don't find it funny.
I am an Oregon fan, and I mean the entire state not just one college or the other. I think this piece had a lot of potential to be very "cute" and "funny" and you missed. Be more indepth, dig a little deeper and when you think you have explained everything, try to come at it from a different angle.
These Duck fans are only upset over their own insecurities. Sure they are a respectable team, but they do often garter extra attention from their uni's. Same with the Beavers, they suffer from the same insecurity. A respectable program, but often feels under-rated because they were horrible for 3 decades.
It is what it is. Same with this piece, it is what it is, trying to be funny and missing.

Dear Kyle,
Why Oregon football is more respected nationally than Oregon State:
1) Non-conference games: OREGON has beaten Michigan (twice), Mississippi State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Minnesota, Texas, Colorado, and Fresno State (a bunch of times) among others. There are some baaad losses (Indiana at home and BYU but those seem the exception rather than the rule). OREGON STATE has been DESTROYED by Fresno State, Cincinnati, Boise State, Louisville and Pittsburgh. Big wins include bowl games over Notre Dame (twice) but the others are fairly mediocre: Missouri (before their big season), Maryland, New Mexico. You want national respect, spot getting smacked around on national TV to BOISE STATE and just about every other preseason game on the road.
2) Both the Beavers and Ducks went 9-3 in 2007. The season was considered a monster success for Oregon State and a disappointing one for Oregon (partly because they were in line to play for a national title).
3) The Ducks are one of just a handful of teams to reach 15 bowl games in the last 19 years. The Beavers have had a string of mediocre bowl games and 28 straight losing seasons.
The uniforms do not "mask" a mediocre team. They help bring Oregon to the forefront. The Ducks (nor the Beavers) will ever be the traditional college football power (like SC or Ohio State). Good for the Ducks trying to stir the pot and get its name in there.
And the ironic thing is, by writing this column, you are doing the exact thing the uniforms were meant to accomplish.
It's funny how Oregon State fans have such a hate-filled grudge against Oregon, yet most Ducks don't give two licks about the Beavers. Little brother syndrome!
By the way, enjoy the Beavs new uniforms -- nice man bra!
